Learning

Leah Learns has been in the works for a while now. What started as an office joke has grown into a fun opportunity. We finally released a new video on YouTube last week you don’t want to miss it. It’s comical, entertaining and educational all in one!

Leah is our SM (Social Media) specialist at Panda Rose, we have started a YouTube channel challenging her each week to learn something new. We have plenty of talent within our team, and community. She will be learning skills we never knew she needed to learn.

Origami

Our First Video

Last week a video was made teaching her how to open bottles without a bottle opener. It is both practical and fun! One method was placing the bottle in the heel of a shoe and forcefully banging it against a hard surface. The momentum pushes the cork out of the bottle and the shoe prevents the glass from breaking. After many swings it was surprisingly successful! The other, more risky, method was sabering. This includes a bottle of champagne (or sparkling wine) and a knife, or in our case a bayonet.  This idea here is to follow the seam of the bottle (which is the weak point of the bottle) and carry the knife in one quick swift movement up the seam and against the top of the bottle. This force will literally slice off the top of the bottle and cork. The other way to open a bottle which unexpectedly had it own difficulties was to simply twist off the cap. The trick here is to twist left, not right.

What’s Next?

In the future we will be teaching Leah a variety of skills. It’s exciting to get to know the small businesses around the community through learning small aspects of their work. You can look forward to a new video every week. Simply Subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss out and comment on the videos ideas you have for our next Leah Learns!

DSLR camera

Your product is ready to sell, and one of the most important aspects of selling a product is how you display it to your customers. Today I’ll give you some simple tips on how you can take amazing product photos on your own.

Eliminate Distractions

Remove any background distractions and place your object on a clean surface or in front of a clean bright wall. This gives your product all the attention it deserves. A clean background or surface keeps your products and photos looking crisp and professional.

Busy and distracting:

Crisp and clean:

Choose Your Lighting

Choose your lighting carefully, take a few seconds to find space near a window with indirect sunlight (natural light). Taking photos indoors can sometimes be tricky. If you’re under florescent lights your pictures may turn out more blue. If you are under incandescent lights, your picture will have more of an orange tint to them. Natural light gives a good balance and shows the products truest color. Steer clear of dark hallways or rooms as this will also distort your image and make it difficult to see the details and quality of your product.

Natural light:

Dark Hallway:

Incandescent:

Florescent:

Focus

Lets take your photography skills one step further now. A really simple trick that will set your pictures apart from the rest is to give your pictures a blurry background, called “bokeh.”  Bokeh  (BOH-kay) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. If you are shooting from a DSLR camera, like I am in these images, you can change whats called the aperture. On your camera it will look like this:  f/5

Changing the number higher like f/10 will give less blur but changing the number lower to f/4 will give more blur.

This image is at f/25

while this image is at f/4.5

See how the glass is blurred drawing the eye towards the mug. This feature is great to use if you are taking pictures of multiple products but want the closest one to stand out or if you want all products in focus. This simple trick takes your photography skills to a whole new level.

Choose your camera

If you take your pictures with a phone, the new iPhone’s have a feature called “portrait mode” in your camera settings that allow you to artificially create the bokeh look. Select Android phones offer this feature as well called “live focus.” Keep in mind with a smartphone camera your outcome may not always give the same effect. The trick is to keep a steady hand when using portrait mode. Shaky hands can confuse the camera and your outcome won’t be as impressive.

iPhone portrait mode (fail): Right corner of the mug has been incorrectly blurred. Shaky hands or improper focusing may have caused this. Sometimes, certain objects confuse the camera. In this case the clear glass and liquid was difficult for the camera to properly blur out.

iPhone portrait mode (success): Steady hands, focus is directly on the mug and a different background object is in place = success!

With these simple yet effective techniques you will notice a huge improvement on your images. It’s always worth the little bit of extra time to play around with your products and camera. Taking great pictures can seem intimidating. These tips will help your pictures look clean and professional, all from the comfort of your office, home, kitchen, shop, etc.

In our office we share memes, eat cake and brainstorm… a lot. But there’s one thing we do even more of.

We use our phones, like a lot, a lot! We use them for testing apps, testing websites, social media management, communication, the list goes on. So with that said, we want to give you the inside scoop of what apps we love to use day in day out, and why they are vital to our entertainment, productivity, communication and lifestyle.

We wrote an article a few weeks back about some of our favorite phone gadgets. Some were for pleasure, others for productivity. If you missed it, you can check it out here as today’s article goes hand in hand. So between, web designers, developers, digital marketers and our CEO, these apps are the ones you need to download, like yesterday!

Let’s begin with entertainment.

Head phones

Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play Music, we need music like we need our coffee!

Podcast can be under entertainment and productivity as there are so many different types of podcasts out there. Our top favorite podcast apps are Podcasts (Apple) and Castbox. Castbox has over  95 million volumes of content and is available for almost all devices.

A few musicians came forward in the office and shared their favorite apps. Guitar Tuna was recommended by a few as an app to tune your guitar on the go or as a back up. It is available for both Apple and Android. Tabs is an app that has thousands of guitar, bass and ukulele tabs and chords for all your favorite songs. If you are looking to take up an instrument here’s two apps that are a go-to’s for the musicians in the office.

Audible is another app that fits into productivity and entertainment. Audible is a mobile library, with loads of books you can listen to or read.

Quora is an app to share opinions, knowledge and feedback. Ask a question and get a helpful answer.

Productivity

editing

Lynda.com is a popular app for taking online courses. You can choose a topic you would like to learn, for example: photography, web design, film, finance, interior design. The list is endless. You can also choose software you would like to learn. So if you are a photographer, maybe a course that is beneficial to your business is learning how to use Photoshop. If you are looking to get into finance industry, a valuable course might be learning QuickBooks, you can learn QuickBooks for payroll, online, for a Mac, etc.

We also have a lot of photographers in the office, so photo-shop apps or editing apps came up right away. Our favorites are Lightroom and Photoshop Fix, both are easy to use and high quality.

Our office uses Microsoft Teams to communicate and share info with each other (as well as a truck load of memes) it’s a secure way to create group messages. There are so many features within the program to expand functionality: like creating different groups, include files, planners and meetings.

If you want to create logos or invitations an extremely useful app is Canva. You can create logos, Pinterest graphics, resize images to fit other social media platforms, create business cards and so much more! We use this everyday to create our graphics, and images.

Lifestyle

Family Organization

Everyone has those apps they use regularly or occasionally that just make your life so much easier. When it comes to lifestyle, the office has a variety of favorites.

Some of us are obsessed with the weather, so we’ve got you covered with choosing the best weather apps. WeatherCan and The Weather Network are our most reliable apps we would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Cozi is a popular app for family organization. You can add shopping lists, cleaning schedules and upcoming events that your family has planned. It’s the perfect app for a busy family and even busier parents.

If you are prone to migraines which some are in the office the Migraine Buddy app is the best app according to both patients and doctors. This app helps you record and identify all aspects of your migraine. For example; what triggers them, your symptoms, medications and so on.

Headspace is a meditation app that helps you let go of stress, learn to relax and get a better nights sleep. If you don’t already have this app it’s definitely a must! Everyone can use a few techniques to reduce stress and anxiety during our busy lives.

What are some apps that are essential for you or just plain fun? Let us know in the ‘leave a comment’ section at the bottom! We’d love to hear from you.

pinterest

Pinterest: An app where women find recipes and DIY projects, right?

recipes

Many people see Pinterest as an app women use to find home improvement ideas or recipes, but it has far progressed from when it was first released in 2010. Marketers are using it as a platform to drive more website traffic and increase sales. Pinterest has become a major visual search engine in the past few years. So how can you use it for your business in 2019?

Pinterest is 80% more viral and 3x more effective at generating leads than Twitter

traffic

1. Pinterest Drives Heavy Traffic

Pinterest has a hover feature that when clicked it directs users directly to your site, This eliminates the amount of steps people have to take to get to your site. The other benefit is that users can pin pictures directly from your site, increasing your websites visibility.

watch

2. Longer Post Exposure

The average lifespan of a Pinterest post is three and half months,  that’s 1,600 times longer than a Facebook post. Pins last forever, meaning that it’s easier for people to search for you and easily find your latest pins. As time goes by and your pin gets shared by other users it continues to spread like wildfire. No need to re-share content and repeat your pin over and over.

3. Excellent SEO Strategy

Use keywords in your description for higher visibility and your target audience to find you easier. Continue to post with those keywords and create boards that are relevant. When a google search is made with that keyword, your pins will show up.

4. Free Marketing From Your Fans

The more your content is pinned the more visibility you gain, just like with any social media, although you don’t need to invest in content marketing, just spend time getting quality images and a good description and your pin is ready to be shared countless times. Users want to be inspired, so inspire them.

share

5. Engage Easier With Customers

Even though Pinterest is smaller than Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, it is easy to engage with people on this platform. Users are eager to share, they want to send their ideas and dreams with others, so if they like your content they will be eager to share it.

We’d love to hear your Pinterest strategies. Leave us a comment below!

Virtual Reality

Today, virtual reality is used for many things, most commonly in the gaming industry. Although that may be the most popular way to use those fun goggles, there’s many ways that common business are utilizing them as well.

You walk past the Microsoft Store in the mall. People are crowded around a person wearing big goggles. They attract attention as they swat around in the air randomly. If it’s the first time you’ve seen this, you may be confused, thinking they are crazy or totally intrigued! But if you’ve seen this before, you might already know it’s Virtual Reality! How does such an advanced tool that seems only practical for gaming apply to common businesses?

Here’s some ways your business can benefit from virtual reality other than games. Don’t worry it will still be loads of fun!

Kitchen

Try before you buy

For example; if you are a hardware store, many people come looking for things to upgrade their home. Sometimes it’s small things for regular maintenance. Other times its a total transformation to their home. Customers can design their bathroom or kitchen exactly the way they want it and use virtual reality to test out their new design.

resort

Promoting tourism

Many Travel agencies are using VR as a way for clients to virtually experience their vacation before they even step out of the office. Viewers can walk the along pathways in British Columbia with a new VR experience called “Wild Within.” You can also add virtual reality to hotel or resort bookings customers can walk through the lobby and even tour a room to seal the deal with their bookings.

Audi

New spin on traditional sales

In the business of selling cars? Why not offer your customers a virtual reality experience to try out vehicles not yet available at the dealership. Promote new features and upcoming looks, so customers can see their dream car in “reality.” Automakers are looking to VR to attract customers, increase time spent at the dealership and to promote car sales. In a Audi dealership in London, 50 percent of customers within the first year of using VR experience, pilot ordered vehicles without customers having a physical test drive, basing their purchase upon their virtual experience.

Safety Training

Virtual Reality has even become valuable on the factory floor. Training employees on forklift safety using VR has many benefits. It’s a safe environment for employees to gain hands on training without the risk of injury or property/equipment damage. While virtual reality may seem costly, it saves time and money on in person training, repairs, insurance claims and liabilities.

virtual reality

Virtual Reality is a fun tool to promote your business and engage with your customers on a whole new level. It is widely used for gaming but has so many more features to offer small businesses as it becomes more mainstream.

We believe every business needs a mobile app in 2019. The number of users downloading apps is rapidly increasing and it’s not stopping anytime soon! We break down some reasons why your business needs an app, yes that’s right (even) YOURS!

Dog Walker

Sales Growth

Is your business selling something or offering a service to the public? Of course! A mobile app keeps users updated by directly sending them push notifications about new offers and promotions. Mobile payments are being used more frequently because of just how easy it is. Setting up mobile payments within your app offers customers another chance to buy from you and making it easy so they’ll want to come back again and again! Win!

iphone

 Audience Building

Once you download a shopping or service app, do you go back into your search engine and insert the web address every time you want to contact or buy from them? Of course not, that’s why you have the app. Users are more likely to click into your app when its right at their finger tips, that is the day and age after all. So it makes sense to set up an app where customers can easily contact you and search things within your app.

Dinner Table

Loyalty Growth

Asking customers to pay for a food order, movie tickets or a dinner table is asking them for loyalty and when its easy, they want to give it you. Keeping customers coming back is key to any business. You want customers to like the products or services you offer and refer your business to other people.

Mobile apps are generating business in so many new ways, the benefits are almost endless! Be sure to contact us at [email protected] with any questions about getting an app set up for you today!

social media management tips

A few months back we had a local business friend inquire about growing her Instagram. This business owner is well known in the local community and even award winning in her industry. She sent me a message along the lines of “Any suggestions what I am doing wrong here? I can’t seem to grow my following on Instagram even though I have these awards and am known in the community.”

This is something I hear often. “Why can’t I seem to grow my online following?”

But before I get into the tips for how to grow your Instagram, let’s first take a look at what your goals are. When I sit down with a new or potential social media management client, I always ask what the goals are for the social media. Is the goal for more sales online? Is the goal for brand awareness? Do you have a specific followers count number in mind?  Who is your customer you are speaking to online?

Armed with some of these answers we can create a game plan.

Personalize your brand

People are not inclined to follow accounts and companies that are all about the sales push. If you can connect with the people following your account through your personalization ,they are far more likely to follow AND to engage with you online.

A couple examples of personalizing your brand could be featuring people who work for your company. Share information about your staff, their interests and their jobs/experiences. At Panda Rose we do a weekly Feature Friday of one of our staff members and they are always a big hit. People like to know who is behind the work.

If you are a single person show or really small operation, you can offer some insight into your life. What do you like to do with some of your spare time outside of the office/work site? Do you have a family? Are you a foodie? Getting a bit more personal helps people connect with you and feel as if they are not always being sold on something.

social media management tips

Have clean/clear pictures

The occasional quote or meme can be fun, but too much of a good thing is well…. too much. Keep the photos you are uploading clean and clear. This doesn’t mean they have to all be done by a professional, but avoid posting pictures that are blurry, too dark and/or poor quality.  You can take fun courses online about photography if you really are wanting to get into it, but honestly there are a lot of bloggers and Instagrammers online that also use their phones for snapping pictures.

BE SOCIAL

I can’t stress this one enough. It’s called social media, not “put pictures up and don’t talk to anyone to get famous media”. Some quick tips for engaging online with others:

  1. Comment on other peoples photos that you follow and that follow you. Talk to the people who are already enagaging with you! This helps build a community around your page/brand.
  2. Search hashtags that are relevant to your industry/business. Are you a wedding cake baker in Edmonton? Search for #yegweddings and find and follow other industry people or couples getting married. Engage with them and be seen, but again also creating that community.
  3. Ask questions on your posts/stories. When you ask questions, people love to give you their opinions. They want to share in their experience with you and give suggestions and tips of their own. This helps with community building, relationship building, shows you are listening and at the same time gives you an in depth insight into your customer. What do they like? What do they want? What are their interests?

Do you ever feel at the end of the day you were super unproductive? That you really could’ve done more? More tasks could’ve been completed, more words written or you just didn’t feel entirely present that day. Don’t feel too bad, we’ve all been there. Here’s some hacks that will help you beat those days and become even more productive during the day.

Wake up earlier

If you haven’t heard it said already you’re hearing it now. Becoming an early riser is probably one of the most popular hacks to become more successful and make the most of your time. Successful people are often early risers. Start your day off the right way in the morning, enjoying the quiet and peacefulness is a great way to charge up for the day. It also ensures you will have time to eat a wholesome breakfast which is the most important meal of the day.

Notebook

Write down the 3 most important tasks for the day

Before you start working on anything in the morning, write down your three most important tasks for the day. Being specific with your description helps you manage your time wisely. Avoid being vague, use more than three words in your description. Saying something like “research printers” can easily allow you to get distracted and your search can become unproductive. Whereas saying something like “find and compare prices on printers” is more specific and clearly states what you are doing.

Use a password manager

Most of us are constantly on the internet during the day, which means that logins and passwords are frequently being used. Trying to remember all of them or digging through papers to find where you may have quickly jotted it down is definitely not time efficient. Use a password manager to keep all your logins and passwords in the same place. This makes them easy to find and input. It may seem like a waste of time transferring all your passwords but it saves time in the long run. You will no longer have to remember all of them or go through the process of resetting a password when you can’t remember one. Simple things like this make you more efficient during your day as well as keeping your information more secure and organized.

Set quarterly goals rather than yearly goals

Setting yearly goals can sometimes be tricky. Your business is changing every few months, thus making your goals tough to reach. Quarterly goals are easier to achieve and ensure you stay on track. Don’t get too carried away with how many goals you set, this can overwhelm you as you reach your “due date.” Instead set a few major or most important goals to keep you focused and preserve your energy for what’s most important as your business grows.

Understand the value of your time

As a business owner you take on a variety of tasks everyday. Some of which are your specialty and some that aren’t. If you have tasks that are better suited for an expert but you’re not prepared to hire an employee to do the job, consider outsourcing to a freelancer, contractor or other professional fitting for the job.

google

Monitor and measure your activities

Keep track of ways you spend your time, limit areas that are not being as profitable or efficient as they could be. By continually analyzing your work you will avoid spending time on things that aren’t as profitable as they once were, and be able to determine which tasks are taking longer than usual. Some examples are:

  • Using Google Analytics – using this tool gives insight to what is effectively driving traffic to your website and what isn’t. If Facebook is generating more traffic than Twitter, more of your time should be spent on Facebook.
  •  Track your time – time yourself to see how long it takes to complete a project and if it could be taking up to much of your time that it’s no longer profitable. Seeing it this way may justify that you pass on the task to an employee, hire an employee or outsource it.

Finding some ways to manage your time will help make you more productive and therefore more profitable, which every business owner is looking for!

Managing Online Reviews

You open your email and find a note saying “____ left a 1 star review”. What do you do?

It’s commonly a joke in the online world that you’ve “made it” once you have “haters”. Meaning that as soon as you are big or important enough to have people that will take time out of their day to say something negative, you know you are on the right track. Well, to an extent. If everyone and their dog is writing a bad review, or has something awful to say about your business, then I would take a look at some things. BUT, today we are talking about how to manage those online reviews that aren’t a perfect score.

What went wrong?

First things first, look into the persons concern. Was it poor service that needs to be addressed with an employee? Did they not receive the product they asked for and it needs to be fixed? Is it an ex employee that feels they weren’t treated fairly? Once a negative review comes in, it may be an opportunity to A) help change their minds or B) improve processes/products. Figure out what went wrong and address the concern offline to the best of your abilities.

Respond

Respond to the reviewers request in a timely manner. This doesn’t have to be done within hours of the review, especially if something is being sorted out. If it is being sorted out offline, still respond to the review afterwards explaining the resolution. This will help show people reading the review that you care and can come to a solution. Be professional at all costs. Getting into a keyboard war with someone online, will not help anyone. Check out this below response that probably could have gone another way……

managing online review

SOME negative reviews is a good thing

Now hold on a minute, I know this one seems a little counter productive, but there is a bright side to a negative review. Like said above, it shows other people that are reading the reviews you care and are willing to make it right for the customer/employee. This shows that regardless of your company size you take the time to look at what’s not working and what you can do to fix it.

Additionally the odd negative review makes you actually look more credible in the eyes of those looking at reviews. It’s nice and all when you come across a company online with a wonderful rating review, but something seems off when you have a lot of full 5 star reviews. Imagine you were looking for a hotel online. You come across a couple options that fit well and are the same price. You take to the reviews to make your final decision. Hotel “A” has 50 reviews total with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5. They have had a couple unhappy people, but otherwise people are generally happy with their stay. You come across Hotel “B” and it has 50 reviews total and every single one of them is a 5 star review. Would you suspect that “something’s up” maybe? How could a whole hotel get it right EVERY SINGLE TIME? I know I certainly would be questioning. In 2014 it was estimated that 10-15% of reviews are purchased! Which is HUGE no no when it comes to your SEO. If you get caught, google will remove ALL reviews and penalize your site showing up in searches!

So do not panic when you come across a negative review online for your business. Managing a bad review can sometimes even be a blessing! Or fun like this hilarious rebuttal below.

SEO for loans

Your online presence has bearing when it comes to getting a loan for your business.

According to Statistics Canada from 2016, 51.3% of small businesses request funds to help with their business. Over half of those people are requesting the money from financial institutions such as banks. Many business owners are looking to purchase equipment to speed up processes, hire employees, get into larger spaces and purchase high volume of items. Whatever the reasoning your business is looking to expand, you may need a loan in order to boost your business to take it to the next level.

“51.3% of small businesses request funds to help with their business.”

Last week we were lucky to have Tom Yeo from Scotiabank in Spruce Grove stop by to chat about the importance of your online presence when banks are considering you for a loan. When looking at getting a loan from the bank for business, there are a lot of factors at play, but as Tom explains, they always look online at your businesses website. Whether you sell online items or not, they look up your website.

So what exactly are they looking for when they look up your business online?

Tom says the first thing he does is look at the company website. He looks at the About Us section to see if it is up to date, relevant and if there even is one at all. He is looking to see that there is contact information and that its up to date. He wants to know that your company is going to have business for the next 2, 5, or even 10 years. Tom says then as he’s looking at the website he is looking to see “that it’s professionally done. That then shows that the company takes pride in what it’s doing and is actually invested in it’s image that’s out there.”

“shows that the company takes pride in what it’s doing and is actually invested in it’s image”

Your business’ online image is important for a lot of reasons. It’s important for potential loaners, investors, clients and even employees.

Tom goes on to say that “there was a company I recently decided not to do business with, because when I looked up their company online, what came up was employee reviews and they were all negative.” Now we all know that in business, we can’t make everyone happy. We also know that sometimes there are people out there that make a point to try to ruin a reputation of a company. When I asked Tom if there was any bearing in responses from the company on reviews he replied that it’s important to “manage you entire presence” and that replying to reviews has a “huge impact if done in a professional response.”

There is a bit of a process when beginning to look at funding options for your business, and managing your online presence is one of them. Look for:

  • Reviews.  Search your company online and find reviews. Respond to any concerns left by employees or clients. We even suggest responding to the people who left you wonderful reviews! It’s great for SEO and building community around your brand.
  • Your website information is up to date an relevant. Make sure your contact information is correct and that your products and services are up to date as well.
  • Your website looks professional.

Pop over to our blog post 5 Website Mistakes That Are Hurting Your Business for more tips!

About Tom: Tom Yeo is originally from the UK and moved to Canada a few years ago. He has been in the banking industry for approximately 10 years in a variety of roles including personal banking, business banking and investments.
