In our office we share memes, eat cake and brainstorm… a lot. But there’s one thing we do even more of.

We use our phones, like a lot, a lot! We use them for testing apps, testing websites, social media management, communication, the list goes on. So with that said, we want to give you the inside scoop of what apps we love to use day in day out, and why they are vital to our entertainment, productivity, communication and lifestyle.

We wrote an article a few weeks back about some of our favorite phone gadgets. Some were for pleasure, others for productivity. If you missed it, you can check it out here as today’s article goes hand in hand. So between, web designers, developers, digital marketers and our CEO, these apps are the ones you need to download, like yesterday!

Let’s begin with entertainment.

Head phones

Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play Music, we need music like we need our coffee!

Podcast can be under entertainment and productivity as there are so many different types of podcasts out there. Our top favorite podcast apps are Podcasts (Apple) and Castbox. Castbox has over  95 million volumes of content and is available for almost all devices.

A few musicians came forward in the office and shared their favorite apps. Guitar Tuna was recommended by a few as an app to tune your guitar on the go or as a back up. It is available for both Apple and Android. Tabs is an app that has thousands of guitar, bass and ukulele tabs and chords for all your favorite songs. If you are looking to take up an instrument here’s two apps that are a go-to’s for the musicians in the office.

Audible is another app that fits into productivity and entertainment. Audible is a mobile library, with loads of books you can listen to or read.

Quora is an app to share opinions, knowledge and feedback. Ask a question and get a helpful answer.

Productivity

editing

Lynda.com is a popular app for taking online courses. You can choose a topic you would like to learn, for example: photography, web design, film, finance, interior design. The list is endless. You can also choose software you would like to learn. So if you are a photographer, maybe a course that is beneficial to your business is learning how to use Photoshop. If you are looking to get into finance industry, a valuable course might be learning QuickBooks, you can learn QuickBooks for payroll, online, for a Mac, etc.

We also have a lot of photographers in the office, so photo-shop apps or editing apps came up right away. Our favorites are Lightroom and Photoshop Fix, both are easy to use and high quality.

Our office uses Microsoft Teams to communicate and share info with each other (as well as a truck load of memes) it’s a secure way to create group messages. There are so many features within the program to expand functionality: like creating different groups, include files, planners and meetings.

If you want to create logos or invitations an extremely useful app is Canva. You can create logos, Pinterest graphics, resize images to fit other social media platforms, create business cards and so much more! We use this everyday to create our graphics, and images.

Lifestyle

Family Organization

Everyone has those apps they use regularly or occasionally that just make your life so much easier. When it comes to lifestyle, the office has a variety of favorites.

Some of us are obsessed with the weather, so we’ve got you covered with choosing the best weather apps. WeatherCan and The Weather Network are our most reliable apps we would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Cozi is a popular app for family organization. You can add shopping lists, cleaning schedules and upcoming events that your family has planned. It’s the perfect app for a busy family and even busier parents.

If you are prone to migraines which some are in the office the Migraine Buddy app is the best app according to both patients and doctors. This app helps you record and identify all aspects of your migraine. For example; what triggers them, your symptoms, medications and so on.

Headspace is a meditation app that helps you let go of stress, learn to relax and get a better nights sleep. If you don’t already have this app it’s definitely a must! Everyone can use a few techniques to reduce stress and anxiety during our busy lives.

What are some apps that are essential for you or just plain fun? Let us know in the ‘leave a comment’ section at the bottom! We’d love to hear from you.

Christmas is coming up and I hope that you have all of your presents bought and wrapped… I know that I don’t. So, if you are in the same boat as me, perhaps you would appreciate a list of the best products your loved ones would be ecstatic to receive from you this year.

If you are not in this stressful situation like the rest of us, here is a list of tech products that are awesome! Maybe you could ask for them yourself!

The iPhone X

I’ve talked about the iPhone in another blog describing the release of the new era of iPhone. From the beginning the iPhone X has been magical. It unlocks by knowing its owners face even when they change their appearance. Talk about futuristic tech! The iPhone X has the best camera Apple has ever created. It has the ability to produce studio-quality photos using its depth-sensing cameras and its provided lighting effects. This iPhone can be charged using a wireless charging station created to change the world of wires.
Apple really wanted to start a new generation by introducing this phone. Maybe you too could be apart of the change!
$999.00

Amazon Echo and Alexa Devices

The intelligent personal assistant is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts and audiobooks, providing weather, traffic and the news. She is like a robot friend created to help you, directed by the sound of your voice.
$29.99-$129.00

iPad Pro and Apple Pencil

I know from experience how cool the iPad Pro is. This 10.5” or 12.9” screen gives you the ability to write, sketch, markup and photoshop with ease. Multitasking, drag and drop, and the app switcher are used to the best of their potential on this device making simple tasks simpler!
$1,229.00

The Apple Pencil is what brings out the full potential of the iPad Pro. Like Apple says, “It’s only a magic wand.” This is what makes the note taking, drawing, markup and photoshop amazing. It provides “new ways to interact with the apps…” like we have never experienced before.
$99.00

Oculus Rift

The Oculus rift feels like a portal to a different planet. The technology brings you into the first person position of any situation, and if you allow your mind, you can experience the thoughts and emotions of the characters you see through. All I can say is, it’s amazing. The Oculus Rift bundle includes the Oculus Rift headset and Oculus Touch motion controllers which now costs $399.00.

Apple Watch Series 3

I also know from experience that this watch is worth the purchase. I have written a previous blog on the Newest Apple Watch which can be found here. This watch can connect to LTE meaning that users can leave their phones at home. Check a text in a meeting, run to the grocery store, workout and swim all with the Apple Watch Series 3. This Watch is focused on fitness and health and has the capacity to inform users on their current health. The many wristbands and backgrounds allow for full customization.
$429-$989.

JIM by Jim Beam

What is “JIM” you ask? JIM is a smart home device from Jim Beam created to serve a shot of Beam’s Bourbon. The device is voice activated and voiced by the “7th Generation Master Distiller, Fred Noe”. I picture this device being very influential when it comes to bars and parties in the upcoming future.
$34.90

R2-D2 by Sphero

If I am going to list a strictly adult age Christmas gift, I better list one made for kids too! This is the closest we have come to having the lovable robot on our planet. Being only 7” tall means that the bot is never in the way. (And can stay on the desks of us adults.) With the R2-D2 you use the app to control the little bot. He acts and responds just like the character in the films. Whether for the long time Star Wars fan, or the super-fan in training, this gift is bound to be fun.
$179.99

I hope this list helps, or at least gets you excited about the amazing tech we have available to us today. I know I am!

Black Sheep Legging came to Panda Rose in need of a new website.

For those of you who do not know, Black Sheep Legging is a clothing company. They rely on the Internet and representatives to sell their product. They emphasize on being unique and owning your style. Based in Alberta Canada, this company is taking the legging market by storm.

Black Sheep Legging’s last website was having issues and they were ready for a freshening up. Panda Rose was able to create a completely new website using Shopify as the store provider without purchasing any extra apps but still equipping Black Sheep Legging with all of the many specific features necessary for the shop.

store front image

Here are the features we created for our client:

Panda Rose was able to create an advanced collection filtering by multiple simultaneous criteria system. This component would be similar to applications that can be found on shopify but now our client doesn’t need to pay about $20 a month.

We added “VIP Pricing” which are custom discount levels depending on the specific permission level according to the tag possessed by the individual. If we didn’t make this feature ourselves, it would have cost our client $30-$50 a month for an application found in Shopify.

We also created an internal customer credit system that fit our exact needs opposed to finding an app that isn’t customizable and or costs money.

Panda Rose also resolved a commonly reported problem as Mailchimp’s scripts often conflict with some of Shopify’s. This problem is usually solved by installing an app from Shopify that can cost around $5 a month. But a developer can solve this quite simply just like we did for Black Sheep Legging.

An affiliate system was required and was integrated with commission tracking. The “Rep Portal” also gives reps the ability to customize their personal rep storefront. We looked through the following apps to integrate into Black Sheep Legging’s shopify:

people

Refersion almost worked but it would not switch customers to reps automatically when they completed the signing up process along with the inability to define different tiers of affiliates. We were hopeful, but it wasn’t a perfect fit for our client.

Affiliatly was attractive in that it was very straightforward and its prices were not bad. But this app left us no room to customize and fit the needs of Black Sheep Legging. Again, we had to look elsewhere.

ReferralCandy was not for a rep program like we needed but looked like it would thrive strictly as a referral program.

Ambassador was difficult to work with, in that we couldn’t really test it without being on the phone with one of the representatives. It’s price tag was also too much for our client and so this affiliate program didn’t quite cut it either.

So we created our own affiliate system. It does everything our client needs it to and it will not cost an extravagant amount every month.

The following three features were created by Panda Rose without an app in Shopify to compare them to:

Panda Rose was also able to use the existing basic tagging feature Shopify provides and built off of it to automate the addition and removal of tags based on events within the store. This enabled the ability for anyone new signing up in the site to be labeled as a “Customer” in our system. This tag is then replaced if the customer chooses to become a rep and will alter according to the rep tire they become. Again, this adjusts automatically.

shopping cart

The cart content checks hold the ability to modify contents on the fly before checkout. This means that Black Sheep Legging did not want customers reaching the checkout if they have more inventory in their cart than there is currently in stock. Upon adding inventory to cart, it’s automatically adjusted down to stock levels, and Black Sheep Legging is notified of the change.

An internal “free shipping” code system was created for rep usage to allow greater control for Black Sheep Legging opposed to Shopify’s discount codes.

If each of the features I have listed were apps that were integrated into Black Sheep Legging’s Shopify, it could potentially cost $15,000 a year. Which is obviously not necessary.

Maybe your company has the money to pay all of these apps to run your store. But can you handle all of the complications that come with having multiple apps piled all over you store? All of their different formats and requirements? Are you able to customize the apps to fit all of your company’s needs?

A developer can integrate all of the features your store may need and ensure that the features fit your specific needs exactly. A developer can prioritize you opposed to giant companies and app creators where you are just another business that is using their product. You can have real conversations with your developer to get your thoughts, questions and concerns addressed. Plus, no monthly fees to last you as long as you have the online store! Hiring a developer is without a doubt a wise investment for your business.

Christmas at a shopping mall

Christmas shopping in the movies paints us a picture of the “holiday hustle and bustle”. People waiting outside of toy stores early in the morning so they can grab the holiday toy of the year for their children. Standing in lines that go all the way down the street. People running around with their arms full of pre-wrapped gifts and over sized bags. Then they probably fall, dropping all of their packages, then they get help from a handsome stranger, most likely fall in love instantly and end up living happily ever after.

Christmas at a shopping mall

This isn’t exactly a reality and not just the sappy love story part. Thanks for the high standards Hallmark.

I myself have never ran around town last minute with arms full of gifts and this is not because I have no friends to buy for, it’s thanks to the Internet!

Between time and money and all the ways that you can save, online shopping is a game changer.

Christmas light on Christmas treeOnline holiday shopping means you don’t have to drive to multiple stores or spend all your time grazing the aisles looking for products they may or may not have in stock. You don’t have to wait in line and you don’t have to drive all the way home again. Plus, no money spent on gas.

Watching holiday classics, eating holiday food, drinking holiday drinks, wearing comfy holiday clothing, surrounded by holiday decorations all while sitting comfortably at home and holiday shopping at the same time is a reality! And it is awesome.

How could we ever go back?

My mom went on a quick shopping trip for Christmas presents the other day even though she is a loyal Amazon customer. She explained to me that it felt like a waste of her time. One of the reasons she loves online shopping is because she can find the best deals offered by all the best brands. She can easily move from site to site looking for the best reviews and deals. No point in making a trip on icy roads to town in hopes of finding all the items on your shopping lists.

Going to the literal stores means she just has to hope that the few stores on her route have all that she planned to purchase currently in stock and that the price is the lowest she could get.

Instead of hoping, she would much rather know.

decorated Christmas treeEven wish lists can be made online now. I made one this year using Pinterest. I filled a dedicated board with pins of all the things I could materialistically want from my family this Christmas season. I pinned beautiful pictures of new hiking backpacks, ballcaps, iPad cases and of course pictures of chocolate. (Incase anyone was wondering.😉) I let my family know how to find it anytime they ask what I want for Christmas. It’s the perfect system.

This way I can show people the exact brands and styles of the products I wish for through pictures! Whenever I see something I like on my Pinterest feed I can just add it to the list. This is opposed to forgetting what I saw and loved, wishing I had taken note for future reference- A concern of the past!😊

My sisters and mother made wish list boards on Pinterest as well. Making it easy to find what they each want. In some cases you can even click on the picture to be brought to the website and purchase the exact product instantly.

There are apps like CheckedTwice.com or Wishlistr that were created to allow consumers to surf the Internet, take note of things they would like and then share that list with their loved ones.

We just need to get everyone onboard. To get our friends and family to all make online wish lists of their own. Christmas shopping could be a breeze! Just look up their name and shop away.

christmas ornamentsOf course life is never simple and I do have one fairly major concern, I believe there is great value in shopping locally. My father is a local business man as well as my employer, Panda Rose. There are many great reasons to keep our money in our closer economic circles. Supporting local business literally feeds our community. That is definitely worth waiting in line for.

Now I must also admit, I love the Christmas decorations that are put up by malls and shops. It’s just one of those traditions I am fond of. A website that took the time to add Christmasy looking features and images are not quite the same as giant trees, thousands of colourful lights and hanging ornaments the size of beach balls.

Are you an Amazon loyalist or do prefer the authenticity that comes with shopping local? Let me know.

Cheers to you and yours as we have stepped into the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

instagram symbol

Instagram has become a way for brands to personalize themselves before their customers. This is thanks to micro-influencers.

instagram symbol

Micro-influencers have become a powerful presence on the platform.

What are they?

A micro-influencer is someone who brands to their audience based on their own personal likes and interests. This strategy works well because these influencers are branding honestly. They aren’t always paid for what they do and still they are able to convince their followers that their favourite product needs to be yours too.

The audience of a micro-influencer may be small. But they achieve something celebrities and giant brands can’t: They create relationships. They also have much higher rates of consumer involvement opposed to celebrities.

cactus

A celebrity can have everything anyone could want materially. Tons of money, the perfect bod, being paid to attend events or workout. (We would all be in-shape if that was the reality for the rest of us, am I right?) You follow these famous people on social media, love and support them. But the lifestyle these people live is not a reality for most of us. The fraction of celebrities in the world is less than 1%. So when they tell us we need a certain product, it’s hard to take them seriously.

1. Because they were paid to sell the product — not genuine.

2. Maybe they do love the product but it still didn’t cost them anything to use the product.

3. They have everything you want anyways, what’s one more cool product they have that you don’t?

This is why the micro-influencers are so successful. They aren’t millionaires, they are real and they choose who they brand for.

The pictures they post are taken by them opposed to sponsored ads. They don’t have to brand for products they don’t like, meaning their reviews are genuine. They can use their account to be real with their audiences and create relationships.

succulents
Succulents, because Instagram loves succulents.

From experience I know that it is very possible to become attached to an Instagram account.

I follow a girl on Instagram she is an artist who is still in art school and she takes pictures of mostly her art. In some cases she will advertise for her pieces. Otherwise she is just a student with amazing fashion sense who posts cute pictures with positive captions. I love it. She could convince me to buy products, no doubt. And she isn’t even a legitimate influencer!

(She is influencing me though . . . maybe she’s just that good, I don’t even know she’s an influencer! 😅)

How do they do it?

They have charisma.

Just like writing a book or script for a TV show, the characters need a distinct personality. What is the character’s family like? What is her obsession? What is his weakness? How do they present themselves at work opposed to in front of their friends? What is their favourite food.

The answer to these questions are found not because the TV show literally says what their favourite food is. Instead you learn by watching the character get excited to eat when they find out there is going to be waffles and strawberries. You learn that they had a spoiled childhood because of the way their parents disapprove of their current lifestyle. Etc.

young people excited about something in natureThe same goes for micro-influencers. They are characters. They either have to come up with who their character is, or exaggerate their real personalities. This way people can grow attached to the perfectly molded character.

People don’t want another brand being thrown at them based on their likes and shares on the platform. They want to know what they need because their favourite influencer can’t remember what it was like to do their morning routine before this amazing product.

Not only do consumers get to hear from likeable people what products they recommend. But the good micro-influencers share the experience. They can give the why, who and how these products have worked for them. Not only are they characters, but storytellers themselves.

young woman on rocky trail in mountains

Micro-influencers have the ability to make their audience feel sorry for them when they have a hard day and rejoice when the micro-influencers can tell their faithful followers good news.

I mean, influence is in their title.

Maybe your small business could use a micro-influencer or you could be that person for your company!

If you see the value in your business having a micro-influencer but you find that you lack the creativity or time needed for such a job, you can find someone to be the influencer for you. Check out this blog for info:

Being a micro-influencer sounds rather glamorous. I love the idea of a job consisting of posting on Instagram, sharing my likes and interests, having a valid opinion, taking beautiful pictures, influencing people and being paid to do it!

branch with leaves in vase

As lovely as that all sounds, I know that it would all take a lot of work. To critique your compelling voice, to make sure you state your opinion strongly without offending others. The dedication and effort would take hours upon hours and money, at least for the beginning.

Who knows, maybe you are up for the task.

How does this impact you?

This isn’t new information. Millennials are not into material things. (Sorry Madonna.) Sure we still enjoy our Starbucks and Amazon products like anyone, but I proudly speak for Millennials everywhere when I say, we are not strictly material girls in this material world.

This may sound false but when you think about it, it makes total sense. We have already been labelled as spoiled because we have had multitudes of ‘things’ available to us. As we’ve grown up, we have learnt about the lack of purpose in our extravagant things.

Does this statement threaten your business?

We have found worth in our experiences! Don’t bother telling us we won a TV or a Michael Kors bag. Instead we want to win the trips to warm places, a weekend away in the mountains or a free meal at a unique restaurant. Pretty much anything that is worth being Instagrammed.

A trip overseas, concerts, charity events, parties, road trips, extravagant group dates, (or less extravagant like McDonald’s) are all experiences that we can do with friends. There are also dates like pumpkin carving, skating, picnics, a day at the river, bowling, mini golf, the list goes on. Sharing experiences with people we love is much more appealing especially when large amounts of money are not always needed!

Yes, sometimes our experiences do cost money… a lot of money. But with our lack of care about brand names we can get everything we want without breaking the bank. I for one, shop at the thrift shop whenever I can as I know I can find my needs and some wants without breaking the bank. And trust me, my wardrobe is still full of beautiful clothing pieces. Because I shop at thrift stores, I am able to save up for the things I value more than brands, like overseas trips.

My friends bought cheap toy guns that fire foam darts so we could have battles in their apartment rather than perhaps purchasing a brand new TV. (An example of adulting at it’s finest.) And what do we get out of our childishness? We have awesome stories to tell and memories that will last a lifetime. Yes their TV works less than great but they don’t need a new one so why would they buy one now?

The experience outweighs the material.

My examples of today’s biggest craze really does seem much less superficial than the picture painted of the roaring 20s or Madonna’s song, but is it? Well yes having less and appreciating more is beautiful. I am just not convinced that we as humans have changed so that we no longer wish to be better then the person next to us. I think this because of the nature of Instagram.

We still feel the need to post all of these experiences. Is it just because we want grandma to know we spent our birthday on an amazing road trip? Or to tell your mom you are being safe at the concert? Of course not. We post so that we make sure everyone knows where we are, what we are doing, and that we are #blessed.

Marketing to millennials requires a promised experience. Does your product have a cute label worth being Instagrammed? Is your office space welcoming and trendy? Is your shop current and appealing? What about your website, is it simple to use and engaging? Have you managed to market your product through word of mouth and social media? I hope that you can answer yes to these questions if millennials are your target market. If you can’t say that your business thrives in these necessary categories, I suggest making some upgrades that are sure to improve your company’s overall position.

I love that more of us are working to gain experiences over the material things. I hope that this trend will never die as it is fulfilling and fun!

What changes have you made to better market to millennials? What experiences have businesses offered you to make you appreciate their business?

It has been ten years since the first iPhone was released. Apple’s iPhone has changed not only the way that we communicate, but the way we think and live our everyday lives. In 2007 we were introduced to the touch screen, where we were no longer pushing buttons, instead we were touching software. The phone was reinvented. In the year 2017 the iPhone updated again. But is this high tech getting cool or creepy . . .

On September 12th, broadcasting from the Steve Jobs Theater in California, excited Apple employees, journalists and notable individuals filled the room. The crowd was welcomed with the soundtrack of Apple’s past advertisements as they waited for the presentation to begin. Tim Cook walked onto the stage after the voice of Steve Jobs spoke in the dark theater and gave a short and meaningful speech on the importance of individuals being true to themselves. He explained that being true to one’s self is the very practice that makes Apple, Apple.

Tim proceeded to announce Apple’s latest upgrades for a few of their existing products throughout the event. These upgrades include an updated Apple Watch, Apple TV 4K, the iPhone 8, wireless charging by Qi and the Apple stores. I had the privilege to watch the Apple presentation in its entirety this year, so I am going to give a brief description of a few of these upgrades, which I find quite fascinating.

The Apple Watch presented by Jeff Williams:

It was confirmed that the Apple Watch is now the number one watch in the world and I assume it will continue to be the best there is with the new Series 3 update.

Among other additions, the biggest enhancement of the watch is that it now comes with cellular. Older versions of the watch would need wifi to text or receive a phone call so people would always need their phones wherever they went. Now you can leave your phone at home while you do errands or go for a run and you will still be connected to the rest of your busy world.

The Apple Watch amazingly, is still the same size as the Series 2 watch even with the cellular upgrade. Other new features of the watch include more detail in the heart rate information, a skiing app and brand new wristbands. All of these upgrades give the Apple Watch Series 3 the potential to be life altering to its users.

Wireless Charging presented by Phil Schiller:

Apple was very excited to announce their new innovative form of technology from Qi which charges your latest iPhone products without them needing to be plugged in. This upgrade handles a few problems which have been experienced with the original way of charging your iPhone.

The action of plugging and unplugging your phone is a simple task but more often then we would like to admit (or maybe it’s just me…) we forget that our phone is plugged in and attempt to walk away only to be unpleasantly surprised by our phones flying out of our hands back to the source of their charging. Apple kindly takes this simple annoyance and fixes it for those of us who could be labeled as forgetful or clumsy. (Thank you Apple.) Another problem fixed by wireless charging is that now you can’t get anything stuck in your iPhone.

Phil explained that Apple has also taken into consideration that businesses such as food chains, airports and vehicles could eventually have these charging units implanted into easy access places for their customers. With no fear of the charging units being stolen from public places, as they would be embedded into the architecture. The simplicity that comes with the wireless charging unit from Qi is an exciting beginning for a world without wires.

The iPhone X Presented by Phil Schiller:

Phil also introduced the reinvention of the iPhone- 2017 edition, the iPhone X. The biggest news about the latest iPhone is how the device is unlocked. To unlock your iPhone X, you don’t even need to touch the screen. This is done by the iPhone recognizing your face.

They have called this Face ID. A map of your face is created when you first set up your phone using sensors, cameras, and an invisible dot projector. These features make up the TrueDepth camera system. And while individuals often change their appearances by dying or trimming their hair, wearing a hat or glasses, or growing a beard; like magic, the iPhone will adjust to you as you change.

This does not mean it is simple for someone who is not you to unlock your phone. Apple worked with professional mask makers in Hollywood to ensure that the system would know the difference between the fake and real you.

This all sounds almost creepy… a device that knows your face like another person would? Could Apple see me if they wanted to? Apple addressed this before a conspiracy could even take off. Just like Touch ID, the information gathered by Face ID is stored strictly on your iPhone. Apple will not get a map of your face when you personalize the device and then create a clone of you for their life-like robot army… at least that’s what I’ve been told.

Final Thoughts:

Although it is intriguing to poke at the idea that Apple has the ability to see all their customers through the front facing cameras of each device, Apple has repeatedly been very reliable when it comes to security. Unlike their competitors who often have issues with keeping their customers protected from bugs and hackers.

Panda Rose has always recommended Apple to their clients. With Apple’s ability to maintain security consistently, it’s hard not to trust the well-loved company with our customers. They have kept their reputation clean and I am certain they will strive to ensure that continues.
